Nanoporous polymers have been suggested as suitable materials for carbon dioxide separation or storage during the last years. Potential application in gas separation requires a good understanding of the CO2 adsorption process and the underlying mechanism and interactions (thermodynamics). We investigated the state of the adsorbed CO2 in various nanoporous polymers by gas adsorption experiments and spectroscopy (NMR and IR). Effects of pore size and pore-wall chemistry on the adsorption thermodynamics and the gas selectivity are discussed and relations to other nanoporous adsorbents such as activated carbon, metal-organic frameworks and zeolites are drawn. We will try to outline the advantages of polymers against classic materials and to point out the way towards real application by discussing initial breakthrough experiments.
