TRLFS is a powerful tool for detection and characterization of curium(III) at trace-levels in various chemical environments. With its 5f7 electron configuration, Cm3+ has several favorable luminescence properties; e.g., a single-emission band which is sensitive to the local environment, and a long emission lifetime which amounts to several milliseconds in the absence of water or hydroxide ligands. Because these ligands significantly shorten the lifetime, their number may be calculated. An equation to calculate the hydration number is known,1 though no such equation exists for hydroxide ions. Here, we report a systematic TRLFS study on Cm3+ and Eu3+ in rare-earth hydroxides, M(OH)3 and MOOH. The emission spectra and the lifetimes depend on the M3+ ionic radii, which influence the 'chemical pressure', the crystal-field strength, and the electron-phonon coupling.
