Encouraging the development of a true academic safety �culture� is a daunting task. Providing useful and practical tools that inform, empower, and assure researchers coping with tricky risk analysis questions should help pave the way to that goal. One such tool, RADiCAL, a web-based risk-analysis matrix employing underlying logic algorithms that is designed to help a practicing research chemist develop a rational and useful hazard control plan or an SOP (Standard Operating Protocol) is described from its inception.By working with the ACS, borrowing great ideas from mature chemical safety programs in industry, learning from process safety experts, using robust and well vetted safety control-banding data and physical properties information, and combining it all with some novel web-based education and training tools, the University of California hopes to nurture that needed cultural shift.
