The mechanism for the biogenesis of the lysyl tyrosyl quinone cofactor in lysyl oxidase has not been fully characterized. Two mechanistic pathways have been proposed leading to the formation of this cofactor.  Spectrophotometric and redox cycling studies of the K320R mutant of lysyl oxidase (which prevents LTQ formation) have revealed that a quinone is present in the mutant form of the enzyme. Based on these data, mechanistic pathway 1 is proposed as the biogenesis pathway leading to LTQ.
