In the quest to capture and use/store energy from the sun, numerous strategies spanning molecular biology and chemistry to material science and engineering have been put forward to achieve efficient and economical use of this underutilized energy resource. Some of the most effective technologies take advantage of large ranges in timescales between processes involving the absorption and movement of photons, electrons, and protons. Competing kinetic processes can become unimportant if timescale disparities are large enough to overwhelmingly favor the desired event, but come into play when rates are comparable. Measuring the rates of performance-determining processes (such as charge injection, recombination, regeneration, diffusion) can provide information to be used for improving individual steps and can be reflected in the efficiencies of overall devices. These rates and ratios have been measured and generalized for n-type dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), but are still being established for the p-type counterparts. Ultrafast investigations of organic and ruthenium(II)-based dyes along with iron proton reduction catalysts adsorbed to NiO films will be presented. Insights into the rates of events such as electron injection and lateral electron hopping will be discussed in the context of improving the performance of p-type dye sensitized solar cells.
