Ultrafast UV-visible transient absorption spectroscopy provides a powerful tool in the investigation of excited state dynamics of transition-metal containing systems. The electronic spectra provide clear features, characteristic of changes in geometry, ligation, and oxidation state. Broad band transient absorption spectroscopy has been applied to the study of a variety of cobalamin cofactors including the coenzymes adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin, a range of alkylcobalamin analogs, and cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin. The methods have also been applied to transition metal containing porphyrins and other ring systems. Laser wavelengths between 520 nm and 266 nm allow selective excitation of different excited states and shedding light on the wavelength dependent photochemistry of cobalamin and other transition-metal containing compounds.
