Understanding electron transfer between metal and redox-active ligand is an important phenomea for the application of coordination complexes containing redox-active ligands in catalysis. In this context, we examined reaction between platinum bis(dithiolene) with various types of ligands. Complexes [Pt(adt)2] and [Pt(mdt)2] (adt = 1,2-di(p-anisyl)-1,2-dithiolate; mdt = 1,2-dimethyl-1,2-dithiolate) reacts spontaneously with PMe3 to yield octahedral complexes, trans-[Pt(S2C2R2)2(PMe3)2]. The low-temperature X-ray crystal structure, and spectroscopic investigations (UV-Vis, IR, XAS) confirm the phoshine induced two electron oxidation on platinum and two electron reduction on dithiolene to form [PtIV(adt2-)2(PMe3)2]. The spectroscopic characterization and possible applications of phoshine induced electron transfer will be discussed.
