The chemical and biological properties of a number of tripodal hexadentate ligands of the aminopyridyl family are described.  The tripod frameworks studied are cis-1,3,5-triaminocyclohexane, 1,1,1-tris(aminomethyl)ethane, and N,N,N-tris(2-aminoethyl)amine.  The interactions of these ligands with divalent metal ions Zn(II), Cu(II) and Fe(II) are described as well as the cytotoxicities of chelators toward cultured HeLa cancer cells, as determined by an MTT viability assay. The findings are discussed in terms of an iron-binding model of the biological action of these chelators.
