A forefront area in materials science is the syntheses of solids with designed extended structures. Many architectures have been prepared by connecting rigid metallic units with robust organic linkers via strong covalent bonds. We have prepared metal complexes with less rigid, but still highly organized structures by exploiting unusually strong ?-? stacking interactions. These solids combine the robustness of transition metal-carboxylate complexes with the supramolecular organization provided by strong ?-? stacking interactions, leading to solids with unusual properties. Using ligands based on naturally occurring amino acids, homochiral transition metal systems have been prepared that show single-crystal to single-crystal gas/solid transformations, including the first example resulting in enantionselective bonding to a metal center.
