Multiple metal centers are used both in metallocofactors and in surfaces to drive difficult reaction chemistry. The synergistic efforts of multiple metals towards small molecule activation lowers the barrier towards molecular breakdown. Previous efforts in the Betley group have resulted in generation of various trinuclear complexes using a hexadentate ligand and various first row transition metals. The tricobalt cluster exhibits interesting reductive reactivity towards various small molecule substrates, resulting in cluster bound atomic and molecular fragments. These resultant fragments can then be further treated with small molecule substrates to generate interesting products.  The tricobalt complex can be reacted with diazoalkanes, resulting in N-N bond activation and subsequent cleavage to afford various tricobalt imides and nitrides. The synthesis and reactivity of various other nitrogen based adducts to the tricobalt core to generate novel coordination compounds will also be discussed.
