The research on CO2 fixation enjoys great attention within the recent years because of its alarming rising atmospheric concentration and the potential use as an ideal C feedstock. Our group is interested in 3d metal complexes supported by redox-active ligands for utilization in CO2 capture and conversion. We recently have synthesized the Fe(III) complex Fe(HL)2Cl, which possesses a novel redox-active ligand (2-(tert-butylamino)phenyl)-iminosemiquinone. Single crystal structure determination shows each of the two iminosemiquinone ligands to be O,N-chelating with metal center, where each ligand possesses a non-chelating, dangling pendant amine. Magnetic data confirms the Fe(III) metal center and one radical on each of the ligands. In this talk, ligand based redox chemistry and the reactivity towards CO2 fixation, including the role of the pendant amine substituents, will be discussed.
