NOx abatement in industrial and automotive exhaust has immense environmental and societal relevance.  In this regard, understanding the mechanisms of NO reduction may lead to new treatment technologies.  Recently, we reported a nickel-mediated NO reduction involving [Ni(NO)(bipy)2][PF6] (1 ), which proceeds via a cis-N2O22- intermediate, Ni(?2-O2N2)(bipy) (2 ). Complex 2  is a rare example of an isolable cis-hyponitrite complex. Our efforts to understand the mechanism of N2O formation from 1 , particularly the manner in which the N-N bond is formed, will be presented. A reactivity study of the hyponitrite ligand in complex 2  will also be discussed.
