The reaction of ditungsten hexa-alkoxide complexes W2(OR)6 with internal and terminal alkynes is often a convenient route to well-defined terminal alkylidyne species of the form W(CR')(OR)3. However, the dimolybdenum analogues Mo2(OR)6 were not reported to react with internal alkynes in a similar fashion. We will discuss the conditions under which certain molybdenum-alkylidyne catalysts for alkyne metathesis, Mo(CR')(OR)3, undergo the reverse reaction, forming Mo2(OR)6, and finally conditions that promote the transformation of the latter into Mo(CR')(OR)3 in high conversion.
