Copolymers, containing phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes as emitters, allow low-cost fabrication of polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) due to facile solution process ability. If the copolymer is furthermore capable of efficiently transporting charges to the emitter sites, the number of needed layers in the light-emitting device might be reduced, which is potentially advantageous in terms of fabrication efforts and costs. A series of copolymers, containing varied ratios of a phosphorescent Ir(III) complex and 9H-fluoren-9-one were synthesized. The complex was designed to emit red light and promote hole trapping at the emitter site due to its carbazolyl-functionalized ancillary ligand. The 9H-fluoren-9-one was, together with the polyfluorene backbone, used to boost charge transport. Investigations of the fabricated PLEDs revealed interesting insights of the charge transport in this class of polymers for the use in PLEDs.
