The synthesis and characterization of perylene bis-imide fluorophores will be described.  The perylene core was functionalized with various alkyl groups at the imide regions, and various electron withdrawing and electron donating groups at the bay region of the perylene core.  Functionalization at the imide and bay regions of the fluorophores allows for engineering of their absorption/emission spectra, fluorescent quantum yields, and for homeotropic and/or planar alignability in 5-cb liquid crystal polymer matrix.  A synthetic scheme for a terrylene bis-imide fluorophore is presented, with the intent of a more intense bathochromic shift in the fluorescence of the fluorophore, and greater alignability in 5-cb liquid crystal polymer matrix.  The fluorophores' application to luminescent solar concentrators will be described, a technology that utilizes a cascading sequence of fluorophores to concentrate solar light near the bandgap of crystalline silicon.
