A novel type of pseudo-poly(amino acids) (PPAAs) based on N-substituted glutamic acids and poly(ethylene glycols) has been synthesized and studied. PPAA backbone is formed by esterification process via dicyclohexylcarbodiimide coupling under mild conditions. The presence of ester linkages in the main backbone provides degradability of PPAAs, whereas amino groups can serve for further PPAA modification and/or crosslinking. PPAAs based on hydrophobic N-stearoyl-glutamic acid are capable of solubilizing poorly soluble drugs and can be considered as promising materials for drug delivery.
