Naturally formed halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were used as a new type of filler for thermoset polymers including epoxy and thiol-ene networks. The dispersion of HNTs into the polymer matrices was assessed via electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cone calorimetry was used to evaluate the fire behavior properties of the composites. Additive concentration and dispersion state were identified as the key parameters that influenced the thermal and fire behavior properties of the composites. The efficacy and mechanisms by which the halloysite nanotubes inhibited the burning of polymer composites were studied. To this end, a systematic study of the morphological changes and chemical composition within the microstructures at different stages of combustion was performed. This investigation allows an advanced understanding of how HNTs effectively enhance the thermal and fire behavior properties in thermoset polymers.
