The architecture of macromolecules plays a critical role in the resulting physical properties of the polymer. A novel macromolecular structure, cyclic brush polymers has be prepared by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click chemistry. The linear backbone was prepared by adding pendant alkyne functionalities onto each repeat unit of a styrenic backbone, via hydrolysis and esterification of poly4-acetoxystyrene. The �clickable� cyclic polystyrene sidechains were obtained via the copper(I) catalyzed click cyclization followed by the attachment of a single azide functionality on each cyclic polymer.. The linear and cyclic components could be combined via an additional click reaction to yield the first reported cyclic grafted linear polymer architecture.
