Novel hybrid materials have been developed via the in-situ reduction of metallic salts in the presence of well-defined porous host matrices, i.e. nanoporous polystyrene (PS) or highly cross-linked porous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate) (PGMA), that were suitably functionalized with either carboxylic acid or amino groups.  A series of carboxylic acid-functionalized nanoporous PS samples was derived from functional diblock copolymers with controlled degradability, while highly cross-linked PGMA monoliths were synthesized by thermal free-radical polymerization using a porogenic solvent system.  The in-situ reduction of RhCl3 allowed for the formation of ~10 nm Rh nanoparticles within PS-based hybrid materials.  In the case of PGMA, Au nanoparticles with an average diameter around 25 nm (for both PGMA-NH2 and PGMA-COOH) were generated through the in-situ reduction of HAuCl4 precursor impregnated within porous PGMA.
