Nickel oxide (NiO)-based nanomaterials have been widely studied with the purpose of advancing overall performance of supercapacitors. We herein report a highly attractive hydrothermal strategy that enables facile, economical, and scalable synthesis of hierarchical NiO microstructures that look like blooming flowers (NiO microflowers). We further modify the NiO microflowers with a thin layer of Ni by partially reduce the NiO surface to obtain hybrid NiO@Ni microflowers.  In this way, the electrical conductivity of the microflower can be remarkably enhanced. According to the preliminary electrochemical tests, the NiO@Ni microflowers-based supercapacitor exhibits an outstanding electrochemical performance, i.e., a high specific capacitance of around 1,150 F g-1 within a 0.57 V potential range and excellent cycling stability almost without capacity loss after 1,000 cycles.  It is believed that the excellent performance can be mainly attributed to the unique hierachical structure of NiO@Ni microflowers.
