Mineral dust that undergoes long-range transport interacts with various trace gases including ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and volatile organic compounds. The products from these heterogeneous reactions may affect the composition of the atmosphere, and create climatic variations. One of the ways to monitor these changes is by monitoring the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere. Here in we discuss shipboard experiments designed to examine the heterogeneous chemistry occurring between Saharan dust and marine boundary layer O3 in transit across the tropical North trans-Atlantic Ocean.  Continuous measurements of ambient ozone concentrations were obtained during the trans-Atlantic AERosols and Ocean Science Expeditions (AEROSE). Analyses of data for ozone in dusty regimes from various cruises will be presented and an interpreted based upon air mass history and aerosol loading. Comparisons to satellite sensing of tropospheric pollutants will also be presented.
