In this work, different advanced oxidation processes: solar heterogeneous photocatalysis, solar photo-Fenton and ozonation, are studied as tertiary treatments for the remediation of micropollutants present in real MWTP effluents at pilot plant scale. Contaminants elimination was followed by LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry (QTRAP)). The order of micropollutants elimination efficiency under the experimental conditions evaluated was solar photo-Fenton > ozonation > solar heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2. But, in general rates are slow when treating low concentrations of contaminants, therefore, one of the solutions for increasing process efficiency would be to increase initial concentration combining AOPs with membrane processes. Nanofiltration membranes were used for treating water containing micropollutants, discharging a permeate free of contaminants and the concentrate was treated with AOPs. It was demonstrated that by combining NF and AOPs, consumption of chemicals and treatment time were both reduced compared with treating directly the water only by AOPs.
