It has been shown that AOPs generally lead to a decrease of specific biological or toxic activities of micropollutants. Nevertheless, up to now, only a limited number of contaminants and toxic endpoints relevant to human health have been systematically studied. More investigations on the potential health effect of the formed transformation products are needed to fully establish the suitability of AOPs for micropollutant abatement. We investigated the degradation kinetics of selected compounds from the EPA's Contaminant Candidate list (CCL3) by the 3 AOPs (hydroxyl radicals, direct ozone reaction and UV photolysis) and the toxicity of degradation products. Our testing procedure involved endpoints relevant to the human health; genotoxic and estrogenic activity measured by in vitro bioassays (the Ames test and the recombinant yeast assay). The degradation of 15 tested compounds mostly led to a removal of their specific toxicity, in rare cases an increase of toxicity was observed (e.g. estrogenicity during degradation of quinoline).
