We are interested in positively charged inorganic materials for environmental applications based on their extra-framework anions. The cationic charge of our hosts allows for anion exchange, which is not possible for anionic clays and zeolites. This talk will discuss our recent advances in both new structure types and anion uptake. Some of our structures recrystallize upon uptake of the oxo-anion such as perchlorate or permanganate (as a surrogate for pertechnetate) (Fig. 1). This specificity allows for unprecedented capacity, selectivity and retention of anionic pollutants. Our materials outperform existing anion exchange materials several fold, including resins and layered double hydroxides.
