One novel water gas shift reaction combined bitumen upgrading process was developed to effectively remove nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms for ultraclean fuel production. In situ H2 was observed more active than molecular H2 by exhibiting higher carbazole hydrodenitrogenation reaction rate and higher nitrogen removal preference. Sulfur-containing compound 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene inhibited the hydrodenitrogenation of carbazole through competitive adsorption.
