Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a flameless combustion technology where there is no direct contact between air and fuel. The CLC process utilizes oxygen from metal oxide oxygen carrier for fuel combustion. The products of CLC are CO2 and H2O. Thus, once the steam is condensed, a relatively pure steam of CO2 is produced ready for sequestration. The many benefits of this combustion process are that it does not produce NOx , its production of a sequestration ready CO2 stream does not require additional separation units, and there is no energy penalty or reduction in efficiency.     Research data on the CLC reactions of coal or methane with Fe2O3 oxygen carriers promoted with alkali metal compounds will be discussed in this paper.  Thermogravimetric analysis, packed bed reactor tests, and FTIR tests demonstrated the effectiveness of using KOH to catalytically enhance the combustion of carbon over iron oxygen carriers.  KOH has been shown to enhance the steam gasification of coal in previous work, but has not been investigated in the CLC research.  Preliminary findings show that the addition of KOH to iron oxygen carrier materials not only reduces the temperature which the coal combustion occurs to below 800 �C from the traditional 900 �C, but it also increases the extent to which the combustion occurs.   The reaction mechanism for this promotion effect by the alkali will also be discussed.
