The versatile nature of polythiophene-based polymers and ability to tune their electronic properties at the molecular level has provided a popular framework for the generation of reduced and low band gap materials.  Previous research has successfully demonstrated the tunability of thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine-based, low band gap materials through the generation of new families of  functionalized thieno[3,4-b]pyrazines. These methods are now being expanded to the development of synthetic routes for new thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine-based terthienyls.  Synthetic details for the preparation of these precursors and representative polymeric materials will be presented along with their optical and electronic characterization to illustrate the extent in which choice of side chains can dictate HOMO and LUMO energy levels in the resulting polymers.
