The growing interest in a �biomass-based� economy has led to new efforts to construct and improve microorganisms capable of producing a variety of chemical compounds.  Identifying methods for the production of biofuels and biochemicals is both a challenge and an opportunity.  Our group is interested in applying principles from Metabolic Engineering and Biocatalysis towards the design and construction of novel biosynthetic pathways for specified target compounds.  A particular challenge towards the functional assembly of multi-step pathways in heterologous hosts is the ability to evaluate and subsequently diagnose limitations in individual elements of the pathway in vivo.  We have developed a modularization approach that enables the implementation of bypasses at several intermediate stages in order to identify bottlenecks that would not be revealed through in vitro studies of enzyme activities.  This bypass strategy also leads to an ability to produce multiple products from metabolic engineering of a single pathway.
