There is currently a consensus that traditional purification methods for purification of large molecules are not optimal and that improved methods need to be sought. This together with the need for more flexible manufacturing in multiproduct facilities will in turn demand higher throughput and efficiency in downstream purification.Recently, a layer-structured chromatography resin with an inert shell and a functionalized core has been added to a downstream processing toolbox available for purification of macromolecules such as viruses, VLPs, and IgMs at industrial scale. This presentation will discuss potential applications of the core bead technology for large scale purification of biomolecules. The technology will be compared against other resin particle designs. Guidelines for optimization of purification processes using core beads will be given. Key and critical process parameters will be also discussed and practical examples based on experimental data will be presented.
