A novel bio-based vinyl ether monomer was conceptualized, synthesized, and polymerized using carbocationic polymerization.  The novel homopolymer derived from this monomer possesses pendent functional groups that can be utilized to produce crosslinked networks either directly or by chemical derivatization.  Using chemical derivatization, a polyepoxide was produced and amine-cured and anhydride-cured coatings developed.  Coating properties were compared to analogous coatings based on a widely utilized bisphenol-A epoxide resin.  Compared to the coatings based on the bisphenol-A epoxide resin, the coatings based on the novel bio-based polyepoxide exhibited similar hardness but enhanced flexibility and adhesion.  A patent application will be filed on this technology in the very near future.  As a result, the manuscript that will be submitted will contain a detailed description of the chemical composition of the monomer and polymers.  In addition, detailed information regarding the composition and properties of coatings will be provided in the manuscript.
