Due to unique physical and chemical properties, the unusual allotropes of carbon, carbon nanotubes and graphene, are finding a wide variety of applications ranging from electrochemical detectors, to biosensors, to catalysts and even as materials for gas storage mediums.  Interestingly enough the oxidized and/or the partially oxidized variant of graphene, graphene oxide (GO) offers water solubility along with just as many possibilities as the pure carbon allotropes.  The amphiphilic nature of graphene oxide sheets allows adsorption of CNTs onto their surface.  It has already been shown that introduction of CNTs on the GO surfaces greatly improve GO's performance in polymer solar cells.  CNT/GO  hybrids exhibit superior performance in optical limiting and supercapacitance, suggesting their potentials in optoelectronic devices and energy storage.  Additionally, the CNT/GO also has possibilities for use as nanowires other forms of nanoelectronics.   For example, the CNT/GO combination may serve as insulated nano-interconnections or building blocks of field-effect nano-transistors.  This work computationally studies fragments of the CNT/GO interface and looks at how the electronic structure of graphene and carbon nanotubes interacts.
