Human adenoviruses are particularly resistant to several chemical disinfectants as well as UV disinfection. Alternative disinfection methods are needed for effective inactivation of adenoviruses in drinking water. In this research, photocatalytic oxidation is evaluated for human adenovirus type 2 and bacteriophage MS2 (a common surrogate) inactivation. Two nano-photocatalysts that generate different reactive oxygen species (ROS) are tested: TiO2, which primarily generates HO� under UV irradiation, and amino-fullerene, which produces 1O2 when activated by visible light. EPR spectroscopy is used to measure ROS production and provide insight on the efficacy of different ROS for adenovirus disinfection. The damages in the viruses' capsid proteins and genetic material by TiO2 are investigated using SDS-PAGE and PCR methods. Damage occurs to adenovirus capsid hexon proteins which results in the release of DNA. The differences in inactivation kinetics and mechanisms between these two viruses are discussed with regard to their differences in structure and function.
