Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is an emerging contaminant. Through accidental fuel spills and from the wastewater of petrochemical industry, MTBE has been introduced into the subsurface in high frequency. Due to the high solubility, biorecalcitrance of MTBE and high volatility, the level of MTBE in drinking water in some areas is increased, so to induce to set limits in its maximum concentration as happened recently in California. Among the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), photo-Fenton oxidation on LaFeO3 supported on monolithic structures permits a high grade of pollutants abatement without after-treatment to separate the catalyst and leaching of metals so appears promising also to treat drinking water. The aim of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of heterogeneous Photo-Fenton processes for the treatment of drinking water and wastewater containing MTBE, investigating the reduction of TOC as a function of irradiation time, MTBE concentration, H2O2 dosage.
