The N-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinoneimine or 'ONO' ligand is a prototypical redox-active ligand capable of spanning oxidation states from �1 (ONOQ) to �3 (ONOCat).  The effects of p bonding of this ligand with middle-transition metal elements on their synthesis, structure, bonding, and reactivity will be discussed.  In particular, ReO2(PPh3)2I reacts with Pb(ONOQ)2 to give (ONOCat)ReO(PPh3) and OPPh3 by nonclassical oxygen atom transfer.  The latter complex activates O2 to form dimeric (ONO)ReO(�-O)2ReO(ONO) with an unprecedented fac geometry of the ONO ligands.
