The use of supported gold (Au) nanoparticles as e?cient catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation has recently attracted broad interest. Although metal salts (e.g., sulfates, phosphates) are widely used as typical solid acid catalysts, they have seldom been used as supports for Au catalysts. In this study, mesostructured BaSO4-SiO2 [SiO2=mesostructured cellular foam (MCF)] hybrid materials with BaSO4 nanocrystalline (5-8 nm) were successfully prepared by a general in situ growth synthesis, which have been developed as a new metal sulphate support system for gold catalysts used in CO oxidation. The size of BaSO4 crystalline was successfully controlled using bifunctional organic alkane sulfonate-SDBS as the sulphate source and surfactant. The high stability and activity of the gold nanoparticles deposited on the BaSO4-MCF support suggest a unique interaction between the gold and nanosized BaSO4 support, which highlights new opportunities in the development of nanosized metal salt supports for ultrastable gold catalysts.Acknowledgment:  Research sponsored by the Division of Chemical Sciences, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, U.S. Department of Energy.
