Held together by coordinate covalent bonds, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been discovered to undergo dynamic ligand and metal ion exchange processes.  These exchange reactions are analogous to those observed in molecular coordination compounds.  In addition, the structural integrity of MOF crystals are maintained during these postsynthetic exchange (PSE) reactions, just as is found in cation exchange processes described in semiconducting quantum dots.  This presentation will detail a variety of PSE reactions, particularly in MOFs that are traditionally considered highly stable.  Of particularly importance is the use of aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ATOFMS) to analyze MOF microcrystalites on a single-particle basis.  The findings demonstrate the utility of ATOFMS in characterizing nanomaterials and the use of PSE to prepare novel MOF materials.
