Two new porous phosphonate based MOFs which incorporate phosphonate monoester ligands were synthesized. The structures, CALF-25 and 26 contain tetraethyl pyrene-1,3,6,8-tetraphosphonate linkers, connecting Ba(II) and La(III) ions into an open framework structure, respectively. CALF-25 contains crystallographically located ethyl groups which line 1-D pores, creating a hydrophobic material with enhanced water vapor stability through steric protection of the coordinate bonds. CALF-26 contains stronger La(III) phosphonate bonds, and as a result was synthesized as a crystalline nanomaterial. The enhanced electrostatic bonds in CALF-26 affords stability to even hydrochloric acid. Structural analysis of CALF-26 was perofrmed through a unique pair distribution function analysis method.
