Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are inorganic-organic hybrid materials that have been intensely studied for gas storage and separation. Recently, MOFs have also attracted interest as water sorption materials in adsorption heat pump applications owing to their increased loading capacities versus traditional silica sorbents. However, the poor hydrolytic stability of most carboxylate-based MOFs presents an obstacle to their development for this, and other, potential applications. With the aim of developing tunable and hydrolytically stable water adsorption materials, we have synthesized a series of pyrazolate-based MOFs containing functionalized naphthalene diimide linkers. The effects of functional group hydrophilicity on the water adsorption characteristics of these materials as well as their photophysical and redox properties will be discussed.
