Myristic and salicylic acids served as model compounds for organic acids in natural waters and organic media to investigate sorption reversibility under environmentally-reasonable conditions.  Reversibility was studied by: extraction by the depositing solvent, self-exchange by the  isotopically-labeled equivalent, displacement by other organic acids, and  by multiple exchange - back exchange cycles. In hexane, alumina retained 43% and 52% through self exchange of salicylic and myristic acids and 97% and 96% for competitive exchange. In water the retention of salicylic acid in self exchange was much lower at 11%. Kaolinite, in hexane, had 37% and 0% irreversibly- sorbed material, respectively, after self-exchange and 30% and 5% after competitive exchange. IR spectroscopy (DRIFT) did not reveal any differences between reversibly and irreversibly sorbed material.
