Ceria and ceria based materials have gained considerable interest as reactive intermediates in solar thermochemical redox cycles that are capable of producing renewable fuels (H2/CO) directly from concentrated sunlight. We present the experimental results of a new reactor concept for the high temperature enothermic reduction of ceria. It is based on aerosol flow of ceria particles in a heated tubular reactor which is capable of rapidly heating ceria, resulting in reaction rates on the order of < 4s during thermal reduction, or more than 150 times faster than rates observed in the literature. Additionally, this concept is capable of operating isothermally and continuously, resulting in relative ease and scalability for large scale operations.
