The sulfur distributions of three kinds of gas oils were analyzed by GC-PFPD, and the removal behaviors of refractory sulfur compounds during deep hydrodesulfurization (HDS) on a highly active unsupported NiMoW catalyst were investigated. The results showed that, gas oils produced by different processes had respective characteristics. MIP-CGP gas oil and Coking gas oil contained more alkyl-derivatives of dibenzothiophene (DBT), which were more difficult to remove. TSRFCC gas oil was in better quality. In hydrotreated TSRFCC gas oil with 50~100 ppm sulfur, C1~C3DBTs were the main sulfur compounds, while in MIP-CGP gas oil and Coking gas oil, more multi-alky substituted DBTs were contained. 4,6-DMDBT and 2,4,6-TMDBT were the only organic sulfur detected in gas oil with less than 10 ppm sulfur, attributing to the steric hindrance of substibuents at 4 and 6 positions. TSRFCC oil, with lower sulfur content, is easier to be hydrotreated to ultra-clean gas oil. While it needs more stringent conditions for MIP-CGP and Coking gas oils for production of ultra low sulfur gas oil.
