129Xe can be detected by nuclear magnetic resonance, just like 1H and 13C. Additionally, it can be hyperpolarized to enhance its sensitivity 10,000-100,000 times, and, when inhaled, this inert gas perfuses throughout the body. Consequently, hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI promises to be a powerful new technique for bioimaging. This presentation will describe our recent efforts to synthesize targeted, water-soluble biosensors for imaging via 129Xe NMR/MRI. The biosensors consist of a molecular cage, which can encapsulate 129Xe, and one or more sites for conjugating a ligand to target the imaging to a certain tissue or receptor.This work is the result of an international collaboration between synthetic chemists at the University of Rhode Island (USA) and NMR physicists at the Wuhan Institutue for Physics and Mathematics (Hubei, China). The development of this international collaboration will be discussed, including both the advantages and diffuculties that are inherent to international collaborative projects.
