In liquid phase extraction, a higher enrichments factor can be obtained with an acceptor phase of smaller volume. We demonstrate no drop microextraction (NDME) using the liquid inside a separation column of capillary electrophoresis (CE) as an acceptor phase, as a way of reducing the acceptor phase volume. For two-phase liquid extraction from an aqueous donor to an organic acceptor phase, a short pentanol plug was injected into a capillary containing a methanol run buffer. After placing the capillary inlet in the sample donor solution, analytes were enriched into the pentanol plug and analyzed by nonaqueous CE. For three-phase liquid extraction from an aqueous donor phase to an aqueous acceptor phase through a middle organic phase, a thin plug of octanol was used to separate the aqueous acceptor phase in the separation capillary from the aqueous sample donor solution. The procedures of NDME were carried out using the built-in programs of a commercial CE instrument.
