Abstract Contamination of the environment with toxic heavy metals ions whether because of human or natural processes is a serious environmental issue that has continued to attract much attention. Many researchers are developing nanoparticle strategies for both detection and remediation of these environmental pollutants. In particular magnetic Nanoparticles (MNP's) are more attractive because of their excellent physical and chemical properties compared with other conventional bulk materials. In this work we use manganese based MNP, synthesized using micro-emulsion method and then coated with gold for heavy metal capture and detection. The MNP were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Cystein was immobilized on the gold coated magnetic nanoparticles and characterized using Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) before using the to chelate lead in solution.  Heavy metals attachment to cystein on MNP was monitored using  voltammetric techniques. These magnetic NP have potential as nano-sorbents for removal of heavy metals from wastewaters.
