Selling counterfeit pharmaceuticals is a highlyprofitable and fast growing business that is in many cases even more lucrativethan hard-drug trafficking and may pose a serious health threat forpatients.  While the market for these counterfeits has traditionally beenlimited to poor countries with little regulatory oversight, the availability ofcheap drugs through the internet has lead to an increase of counterfeit drugsbeing sold and consumed in western markets as well.  We analyzed a numberof analgesic drugs from a variety of different countries and sources withthin-layer chromatography, LC-MS instrumentation, and several other commoncounterfeit tests.  Results were compared with label packaging and locallyobtained analogs.
