Phthalate Esters (PAEs) have potential toxicity and pose adverse effects on human health have received great attentions in the context of environmental management. Now, some PAEs used as ingredients in cosmetic products are prohibited in Taiwan, China and the European Union. In this study, capillary electrochromatography (CEC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) determination of PAEs analyses for the first time. A series of organic-based polymonolithic columns prepared by single step in situ polymerization was used as the separation column. The major effect of PAEs separation and retention in the CEC system were predominated by the ratio of the monomer for the monolith preparation as well as the mobile phase condition for step gradient elution. In addition, an on-line concentration step coupled with this method can further enhance the detection sensitivities of test PAEs. Finally, this work demonstrated that the method provides baseline separations for PAEs in river samples with good detection sensitivity.
