A comparative study of the synthesis and properties of the carbon dots from various carbon sources like alcohols, aldehydes and carboxylic acids with various passivating agents will be presented. Highly fluorescent carbon quantum dots or Carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by a novel, facile, one step, microwave assisted method in minutes. The effect of various parameters like concentration of the precursors, reaction time, pH, passivating agents and temperature of reaction medium will be investigated. The synthesized carbon dots were characterized using various techniques like Ultraviolet-Visible, Fluorescence, Fourier Transform Infra-Red, Raman and Dynamic Laser Light Scattering spectroscopies. Further characterization was performed with Transmission Electron Microscopy and electrochemical techniques. Their utilization in analytical, imaging and targeted delivery applications will be demonstrated.
