The emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria (MDRB) has exponentially reduced the efficacy of various medicinal compounds used to treat MDRB infections. This may be resolved by use of an ionic liquid approach.We define a G roup of u niform m aterials b ased on o rganic s alts (GUMBOS) as solid phase organic salts with melting points between 25 �C and 250 �C. Broad tunability and ease of synthesis of GUMBOS make them almost ideal candidates for the creation of novel antibacterial therapeutic agents. Particles in the nanoscale derived from GUMBOS (nanoGUMBOS) incorporate the favorable properties of GUMBOS and can encompass the unique physicochemical properties of nanoparticles. This talk will discuss �-lactam-based GUMBOS, nanoGUMBOS, synthesis and characterization. �-lactam-based Chlorhexidine GUMBOS exhibit increased activity versus MDRB as compared to parent compounds. Thus, it is proposed that octenidine based GUMBOS and nanoGUMBOS will further potentiate increased activity as compared to chlorhexidene based GUMBOS due to broader activity.
