Transition-metal catalysis is a promising method for the activation and functionalization of C-H bonds.  One strategy that has recently been employed involves the utilization of directing groups to facilitate C-H activation. While this strategy has been demonstrated with Pd, Ru, and Rh catalysts, catalysts that feature Ir have not been developed. However, iridium has been shown to be among the most effective metals for the stoichiometric activation of C-H bonds. Cp*Ir(III) complexes have been shown to catalyze the formation of isocoumarins and isoquinolones from alkynes, and benzoic acids and benzamide derivatives respectively. The mechanism of C-H activation appears to be different for the two substrates. The implications of this observation will be discussed.
