Borenium salts provide entry to a new class of metal-free hydrogenation catalysts based on 'frustrated Lewis pair' (FLP) reactivity.1 These species are generated from readliy accessible N-heterocyclic carbene boranes and are shown to catalyze the selective, metal-free hydrogenation of unsaturated substrates at room-temperature.21) Stephan, D.
